Action Plan An Action Plan is a plan for making a teaching change that will enhance your students understanding of mathematics. Describe your teaching situation
Name: Krystle Harris
School: Oroville Middle-High School
Teaching assignment: 7th - 12th Math, 8th Grade CMP, Geometry, Trigonometry
Describe your student population: 90-100 students, mostly caucasion with a few hispanic students. english and spanish
Describe your teaching change What teaching change (instruction, assessment, materials) you like to improve?Explain how your teaching change will improve your students’ ability to learn mathematics. Also, describe possible ways that technology might assist you in making your teaching change.
I would like to change mostly my materials. Last year was my first year teaching and I had not used the books before so all of my materials/worksheets came directly from the books. I believe it would be more helpful to the students to see representations of problems in different ways that are not in their books, so the website and fathom activities would allow them to actually interact with the concepts that I am trying to teach them. I will have the students interact with fathom and the website activities on the SmartBoard as a class so that everyone can interact with the topics we are learning.
Set Teaching Goals Identify at least two teaching goals (measurable accomplishment that if met would enable your students to learn mathematics more effectively).
Goal 1: Use materials and activities that are not found within the text books.
Goal 2: Allow the students to interact more with the topics, ie using the SmartBoard, Fathom, blogging and website activities.
Describe Teaching Actions Describe at least two things you are going to do as a teacher to accomplish your teaching goals. These actions may or may not use technology but if they do not use technology, explain why technology is or is not the best teaching tool for your teaching change.
The first thing I will do to accomplish goal one is to use fathom, and the numerous websites we have been shown to find materials and activities that pertain to what we are learning in class, but give the students a different example of how to solve or work through a problem. The second thing I will do to accomplish goal two is to have them use the SmartBoard to instruct others, instead of just myself writing what they had told me to put on the board. I would also have them do this with any of the Fathom or website activities that were put onto the SmartBoard. Lastly, for both my goals I would love to have my students blog at least once a week, but I am not sure if we will be allowed to let the students blog on the school computers.
Assess Teaching Goals Identify how you are going to assess each of your teaching goals (simple method of collecting information to see if your teach goals was met).
I am going to assess each of my teaching goals by keeping track of how many days a week I used an activity/worksheet that did not come from the text books, for each of my classes. I will also keep track of how much the students are coming up to interact with the SmartBoard, Fathom, and other activities compared to how much I am doing.
Timeline Outline a general timeline that identifies when you are going to use your actions, collect your assessment data
I will start finding alternative materials and activities to go along with the text book activities in September and keep it going throughout May. I will collect my assessment data starting in September and end it in May.
Reflection Write a reflection on the results of your action plan. What was difficult? What worked well? How did your students react to the changes you made? What was the impact on student learning?
